Mr. Gould was the third born of the [[Herman Day Gould, 1799|Hon. Herman D Gould,]] who was a prominent citizen of Delhi, and may be said to have been one of the founders of the village—the senior member of the firm of Gould & Marvine, the principal mercantile firm of the town. He established and became and for many years was the president of the Delaware Bank. 

He married in 1826, Ann Eliza, daughter of Hon. Samuel Sherwood. Herman Day Gould was born in Delhi in October 1839. He entered Amherst College, and after leaving college was in business here for a short time, and in or about 1859 went to Florida where he began mercantile business at Fernandina. When the war broke out he hurriedly closed up his business and returned North. In 1863 be moved to Chicago where for some time he was with the Chicago and Northwestern R.R. Company, and thence to Peoria, where he was in the office of the Toledo, Peoria & Western R.R. Company, of which he soon became the General Passenger and Freight agent. He filled this place most acceptably until he was forced by ill health to resign, greatly to the regret of the officers and members of the company. Mr. Armstrong, the General Manager of the railroad, brought his remains here for interment at Woodland Cemetery, accompanied by Mr. S. Augustus Gould, the brother, and Edward Lasell Gould, surviving son, of the deceased. 

Mr. Gould married Miss Ella Lasell, daughter of [[Professor Lasell]] and niece of Mrs. Dr. Jacobs, of Delhi. His wife, his son Edward, and his daughters Miss Ruth and Catherine, survive him to mourn the loss of an affectionate and loving husband and father, and his many friends will not forget him.
