He died August 13, 1831, Northampton, Fulton County, New York state. 

He was the son of Cornelius Gerrit Van Ness and Alida Van Ness (Jacob Jacobse Van Woert and Hendrickje Van Woert)

He married Effie VanNess, 16 March, 1769 [pension app] 
<br>she applied for a pension, 9 February, 1842. Stating that her husband, Garrett Van Ness was a soldier in the Revolution in the New York militia, serving in the battles of Fort George and Fort Edward as an orderly sergeant under Captain Smith, 8 months of short tours in 1776 and 1777. 

On the fourth of July, 1778 he was commissioned a lieutenant in Captain Doty's company, Colonel Wart's regiment of militia at Albany county. He served from 1780–82, at Fort George, Fort Anne, and Fort Edward.
