Fly Market Slip. (E18-E19) Now Maiden Lane between Pearl and South Streets. The word "Fly," however apt it might have been for a market, did not refer to insects. It comes from the Dutch vly, meaning a valley or low lying area, as in Smith's Vly. (This is also the origin of the "fly" in Tenafly N.J.)
