Nixon Masks. Rubber and/or latex.
- (a) Mask from 1967
- (b) Articulated Mask with liver spots on forehead
- (c) Large Mask with grotesque caricature features
- (d) Masks of later vintage, ca. 1980’s-1990’s
Nixon, famous for making diplomatic contact with China, now is known through masks caricaturing his features, virtually all of which are made in China.
Judging from the features, the middle two masks, (b. and c.) date from the immediate post-Watergate period. Later masks (d 1. and 2.) dating from the 1980’s and 1990’s show a tendency toward large front teeth, even towards a pronounced overbite; which is quite inexplicable, but may be ascribed to the popularity of Jimmy Carter masks just a few years earlier.
