He was the son of Cornelius Gerrit Van Ness and Alida Van Ness (Jacob Jacobse Van Woert and Hendrickje Van Woert)
He married Effie VanNess, 16 March, 1769 [pension app]
she applied for a pension, 9 February, 1842. Stating that her husband, Garrett Van Ness was a soldier in the Revolution in the New York militia, serving in the battles of Fort George and Fort Edward as an orderly sergeant under Captain Smith, 8 months of short tours in 1776 and 1777.
On the fourth of July, 1778 he was commissioned a lieutenant in Captain Doty's company, Colonel Wart's regiment of militia at Albany county. He served from 1780–82, at Fort George, Fort Anne, and Fort Edward.
