Ezra served in the Revolutionary War. He then moved to New York with several of his brothers. He first settled at the head of the Delaware River where he built a flour mill. He searched for mines and died in 1803 while on a westward prospecting tour.

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. After his marriage he emigrated with his brothers Brinton, Edward and Timothy to the state of New York. Attracted by the reports of valuable ores, he settled near the head of the Delaware River, where he built a flour mill, the first in that region. He prosecuted his search for mines with zeal and energy, but without success. He started westward on a prospecting trip and died on the journey.

1790 - census of Harpersfield, Montgomery county, New York lists:

In 1792 Franklin, and in 1793 Kortright were taken from Harpersfield, reducing it to nearly its present dimensions. In 1834, a small portionwas annexed to the town of Stamford to accommodate the village of Hobart.

During the first twenty-six years of its existence, Harpersfield belonged to five different counties, viz: 1771, Albany; 1772 to 1784, Tryon; 1784-1791, Montgomery; 1791 to 1797, Otsego, and in 1797 to Delaware.
