Subgroup: Flocked Items

Label from the Robert Hull Fleming Museum, Burlington, Vermont, 2000

Like the category of “Patina,” Flocked Things are flocked only on the skin, or epidermis of each object. With the gourd, this is surface is applied by the successive generational changes undertaken by Nature in all her sweeping variations.

With flocked mammalia, a very different force is at work; this time cultural. The forces of a restless and sometimes predatory capitalism create gift items of both greater and lesser cultural significance. Many of the later are included in this show. Flocked items are to be found in a seemingly unlimited palate of colors. (See subgroup, “Color As A Hysterical Reaction.")

Industrial History
