What does it mean to be "invasive"?
Is invasive offensive? What about "alien invasives"? Are all invasives aliens?
Is to label a plant or an animal as "invasive" akin to labeling that organism as unwanted—or even harmful? And are humans part of the equation? Of course they are. And is it offensive to label a human being an invasive. We would all say yes. But is an alien human being necessarily invasive; or merely unnaturalized? And isn't the immigrant contribution to the United States one of our proudest achievements?
Perhaps aliens—in the truest sense—can only come from outer space. Perhaps human beings (H. sapiens) are never really aliens. Even some of them seem to be...
And if that is true of humans, why isn't it true of other living things—even plants—even knotweed?
All these questions and many more are being currently researched my Museum staff.
